GTC Registration
You must be registered with the GTC if you have UK qualified teacher status and you are required to carry out ‘specified work’ in a maintained school, a non-maintained special school or a pupil referral unit.
‘Specified work’ is defined as:
- planning and preparing lessons and courses for pupils
- delivering lessons to pupils
- assessing the development, progress and attainment of pupils
- reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is a requirement for registration.
Currently teachers with qualifications from Scotland, Northern Ireland or elsewhere in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland may be eligible for qualified teacher status (QTS) without further assessment. They should contact the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE) to have their qualifications assessed.
In addition experienced teachers working in the independent and further education sectors can apply for QTS.
Application forms are available from the GTCE by telephoning 0870 001 0708 or by e-mail to registration@gtce.org.uk
Teachers who hold teaching qualifications gained outside the EEA cannot be registered with the GTCE until they achieve QTS.
Teachers who trained outside of the EEA and who are not nationals of an EEA member state can work for up to four years in England as a temporary teacher without the need for QTS and therefore without GTCE registration.
